Here are a few links for Christmas crafts that I have come upon in my searching. Thought I would post them here incase anyone else is interested.

Handprint Santa Cards

Ice-block Stick Puzzles – These would be great inside home made crackers.

Microwave Salt Dough Ornaments

Beaded Decorations – Would be more suitable for older children.

As I find more ideas I will add them here.

Unplug Your Kids has a weekly theme to challenge you to turn off the TV and have some fun with your kids. I think this is a great idea and I am looking forward to doing this weeks theme ‘Flat’. If you are interested in having some fun with this challenge each week I would love for you to leave a comment and link to your blog so that I can see what you get up to. I will post pics of what we get up to each week here on this blog.

Here is another great looking website that I stumbled upon. Some of the stuff is only available through membership but there is also a lot of free stuff anyone can access on there. I came upon the site by googling endangered animals and this site has such an extensive list of activities on the subject that you could use it as a theme covering all the main subjects. There were activities such as word maths problems, reading comprehension and colouring pages for the younger children (and the young at heart).

My girls just love hearing the stories of Laura and her family. I was very excited to find this link today when reading one of my readers blogs. I think in the future we will definitely have to save up for the studies on the books. So far my girls have a prairie style nightgown and I have a dress and apron pattern on order. Ourlocal Pippin and Brownie unit is also having a Prairie Days camp at the end of this term. I love seeing my girls getting engrossed in something that they truely enjoy.

Fun facts

  • There are seven colours in the rainbow – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
  • The colours are always in the same order starting with red at the top.
  • You can memorise the colours by remembering the name ROY G BIV
  • Rainbows are made of light, you can see them with your eyes but you can’t touch them.
  • Sunlight looks white but is really made up of every colour of the rainbow.
  • To see a rainbow the sun must be shining behind you and there must be water drops in the air in front of you. The sunlight shines in the water drops and makes the colours.
  • The brightest rainbows are made when the water drops are large – after a rain shower or near waterfalls or waves.

Some fun things to try

  • Make a rainbow using a garden hose. With the sun shining on your back spray a fine mist of water below your eye level and you’ll have made a rainbow.
  • Go on a scavenger hunt collecting something for every colour of the rainbow.
  • Make a rainbow collage.
  • Sing the song “I can sing a rainbow”
  • Have a go signing the above song. (link for a video on the words page)
  • Draw a rainbow with chalkĀ on the concrete.
  • Read a story that has a rainbow in it. (Finding a book with rainbows in it could be something fun to do at the library)
  • Make rainbows on the wall using a prism.
  • Make up a poem about rainbows.
